A Guide to Alberta's Energy Market for Newcomers

Welcome to Alberta! We're thrilled you've chosen to make this great province your new home. As you're settling in, one of the first things you'll need to do is set up your utilities. We know that navigating a new energy market can be confusing, but don't worry – Prairie Power is here to help.

Find out more

As a local Albertan company, we're committed to making your transition as smooth as possible. We believe in transparency, affordability, and friendly, local service. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Alberta's energy market, from choosing a provider to understanding your bill.

Unlike many other provinces, Alberta has a deregulated energy market. This means you have the power to choose your electricity and natural gas provider from a variety of retailers. This competition is great for consumers, as it encourages competitive pricing and innovative services.

Understanding Alberta's Deregulated Energy Market

Generators:

Transmission and Distribution Companies:

Transmission and Distribution Companies:

These are the companies that produce the electricity from various sources like natural gas, wind, solar, and hydro.

Transmission and Distribution Companies:

These companies own and operate the infrastructure (wires, poles, and pipelines) that delivers energy to your home. Your location determines your distribution company, and these charges are regulated.

Retailers:

This is where you have a choice! Retailers, like Prairie Power, purchase energy from the wholesale market and sell it to consumers.

Choosing Your Energy Provider

When it comes to choosing an energy provider in Alberta, you have two main options: the Rate of Last Resort (RLR) or a competitive retailer.

  • Rate of Last Resort (RLR): The RoLR is the default option if you don't sign a contract with a competitive retailer. The rates are approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and can fluctuate monthly based on market conditions. While this is the default, your monthly energy bills fluctuate drastically and most consumers are missing out on savings.

  • Competitive Retailers: Competitive retailers, like Prairie Power, offer a variety of plans and rates. You can often lock in a fixed rate for a set term, which protects you from market volatility and makes your monthly bills more predictable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at customercare@prairie-power.ca if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes! You can switch from the Rate of Last Resort (RoLR) to a competitive retailer at any time. If you're already with a competitive retailer, be sure to check your contract for any terms related to switching.

Your retailer will typically contact you before your contract expires with options to renew. If you don't renew, you may be automatically switched to a variable rate or back to the RoLR.
